No Cost New Pillows

Shrink the size and save the quality of old pillows

Everything is expensive these days.  Whenever I’m in the household goods section of a store, I think about buying new sleeping pillows. I know folks that buy a new bed pillow every 6 months or year. I am not one of them.

Recently, I cleaned out some vacuumed sealed bedding from under the bed, and I found four king size pillows.  Two were feather pillows and the other two had traditional foam stuffing.  All four had lost their shape. That’s why they were under the bed, mashed like pancakes.

I decided I could turn these Kings into Standards.

I do not like feather pillows. My husband loves them. He calls them his “softees.” So I saved those old feather pillows, too.

So how did I do it?  First, I cut open one end of the pillows. I then shook them until all the stuffing or feathers settled to the bottom for fullness.

I then cut across about 4-6 inches down (depending on how firm you want the pillow) from the open end to remove the excess fabric. I folded in the raw edges, pinned and sewed them closed.

We now have 4 firm/soft sleeping pillows that feel like new.

Think about the money you can save! Even if you do not need any new pillows, re-fluff and recycle those that are losing their shape. Also consider donating them to a shelter for the homeless so that someone else can get a good night’s sleep.

Think about upcycling and reviving home goods before you toss!
