A Lighthouse Made of Plastic Trash

Turn one of the ocean’s Biggest Enemies into A Seaside Icon

I recently found plastic Christmas cookie containers in a closet. I knew I would not use them since I am not a baker, so I certainly didn’t need to hang onto them. Instead of tossing them in the trash, I started using my imagination to come up with fun ocean themed décor. In that same closet, I found a plastic bowl. I remembered that I also had an empty plastic Folgers coffee container.  I saved it knowing I could eventually do something with it. As my imagination began to churn, I remembered that I also had leftover plastic party cups with silver tops. That is when I came up with the idea to make a Lighthouse!

I grabbed some craft sticks, paint, jute twine, assorted tiny rock chips and a mini wooden helm (boat steering wheel)  from my craft stash.

After painting the plastic containers barn red and white, I used black paint to define the windows and entry. I glued it all together with my hot glue gun. I then painted the craft sticks and glued them to the coffee container lid to create a rail. I stacked 4 plastic cups and glued them to the top to create the “light” of the light house. I created the roof with the black bowl.

Then came the fun part! I glued jute twine, rocks and the painted wooden helm to the structure. I used glitter paint to complete my stone lighthouse with a sea spray look.

Now I have an environmentally friendly ocean themed accent piece in my dining room.
