How to Modernize an Antique without losing the Charm

My husband brought home an old gumball machine he had owned for years.  At first I thought it was so cool and nostalgic. It was a little wobbly and heavy!  But as much as I moved it around from room to room, I just couldn’t get it to fit my seaside décor anymore.

I asked for permission to paint it.  With some hesitation, he agreed to let me do it.  I think he is ok with it now.  I know I am.
