The Rookery

Reposted from a Blog We Follow – Nomad Juju

We have shared dozens of ways to upcycle the kind of trash that ends up in our natural habitats. Here’s a gorgeous repost from a fellow blogger to remind everyone to reuse it first!

Great Egret in Breeding Plumage

The Rookery at High Island is another property that is managed by the Houston Audubon Society. It is a property that has several small ponds. One of the ponds has several islands covered with trees. This is where a lot of herons, egrets, and other large water birds go to nest. There is a boardwalk on the mainland that is elevated 17 feet in the air. When you are on the boardwalk, you can look across to the island and be at the same level as the nesting birds.

What a treat to be able to look across and see the process of nest building, lying on and tending eggs, and occasional new hatchlings. I was so excited when I got there that I skipped the guided tour that was about to start and forgot to take any photos of the boardwalk!
