Turn a Tall Skinny Box into a Vase

You can Create Stunning Statement Pieces out of Trash

I just can’t throw Amazon boxes away. They come in all different shapes and sizes; depending on what I buy.

I found a yard of fabric that was going to work just perfect in covering this box.

I started by removing the stickers and labels from the box and cutting off the flaps at the  top of the box.

When using fabric to attach to a box with glue or mod podge (which is what I used), you want to start by making sure it is wrinkle free so that it will lay flat. Once I ironed the fabric, I then measured and cut 4 pieces to cover all sides of the box.

To apply the fabric to the box, I used Mod Podge and a brush to apply and then gradually laid the fabric on top of the Mod Podge, smoothing it out as I went.

As I covered all 4 sides (leaving the bottom of the box uncovered and folding the fabric panel inside the opening of the box), I applied 2 layers of Mod Podge all over the 4 sides, letting it dry between coats.  I sealed the raw edges on each of the sides with the Mod Podge.

Once the box had dried, I applied jute twine using a hot glue gun.

I started with the bottom of the box, wrapping and gluing the twine until the bottom was covered.

Next I wrapped the twine around the top opening of the box, starting on the inside of the opening and securing it with hot glue.

Now it was time for a design. I must admit this took me a long time, a lot of twine and a lot of glue sticks!  I used a toothbrush between application of twine to brush and remove excess glue globs and webs from the twine and fabric.

Once I was finished with all 4 sides, I stood back to see if I needed to add anything else. This is when I decided to add a few colorful glass rocks and do a flower design. Remember, it does not have to be perfect!

I added silk flowers and greenery. It’s great to keep artificial flowers in your stash for these kinds of low cost home décor ideas. Since the box vase was tall, I purchased several foam blocks for arranging flowers and put them in the box to insert the flowers. I also purchased some green moss to add as filler. It was important to have a little weight in the bottom of the box since the tall flowers were a little heavy.

Another home décor piece thanks to a box!
